“There is another one right there,” Becky said and pointed at a house that had the side door to it wide open. There was also a truck, in an almost pristine condition, parked at the top of the driveway.
Jill nodded but didn’t say anything at first.
“Seems like there’s someone in there, though,” Becky said and put her hand on the machete at her side. “That truck’s like new or something.”
“Yeah,” Jill said, not taking her eyes off the house. “Wanna check it out?”
“We could. We just have to keep our guard up, get out at the first sign of trouble.”
“You don’t have to tell me twice,” Jill said and took her gun out.
Becky saw this and shook her head. She pointed at the baseball bat they had found in the woods a mile or so back. The thing was there in the open, next to an empty backpack that was splattered with blood. “We found it, now use it.” She felt like she was scolding Jill, like a mother would and felt a bit silly about it. There was no excuse for it, since they had to conserve their ammunition as well as try to do their best not to attract others with the sounds of gunfire.
“Damn, alright,” Jill said and put the gun in the small of her back. “It just gets the job done quicker.”
“We’re not arguing about this right now,” Becky added and pulled out her machete. “We don’t know who’s in there and if there’s anyone else around.”
Becky made her way around to the passenger side and pulled on the handle but the door didn’t open. “This one’s locked.”
Jill shook her head on the other side as she had no luck opening the driver’s side.
Becky put her one free hand up to block the glare and looked inside the truck. The car looked alright on the outside but the inside of it was splatter with blood. There was a man in there who not that long ago decided to blow his brains out. Becky could see the nasty bite on his right arm that was now beginning to rot. His gun ended up in his lap after he had shot himself and it looked like he had used his last bullet.
“Well that’s that,” Becky said when she saw Jill peering in on the other side. Through tinted glass, she saw her shake her head, not in disbelief but in the fact that this was just another lost opportunity. What they thought was going to be a working vehicle turned out to be nothing but a tomb.
“You know what?” Jill asked as she walked away from the truck and started up the driveway and toward the house.
“What’s that?” Becky said and followed after her.
“I doubt it even has gas in it. Even if that poor bastard wasn’t in there, that’s just our luck, you know. Even if it was all good and dandy on the inside, there’s no gas in the tank. Just a gut feeling, I guess, but a pretty strong one.
